Classic Easter Traditions for Seniors to Take Part in

Easter activities at our assisted living community

With Easter just around the corner, we’re all enjoying the warmer temperatures, the crisp spring air, the blooming flowers, and the feeling of renewal that accompanies this time of year.

Like many of us, your family probably ranges from younger kids to older adults, and you’re interested in Easter traditions that everyone can enjoy. So, what are some classic Easter activities that the seniors in your family can participate in?

Dyeing Easter eggs. Creative flair knows no age, and the older adults in your family can let their artistic talents shine when dyeing and decorating eggs. If mom or dad is in assisted living, set up visitation (indoors or outdoors) or coordinate a Zoom session with their caregivers to dye Easter eggs. Have a friendly competition with a scoring system to see who created the most egg-cellent looking egg!

Host an Easter brunch. Easter is a time for families to gather and enjoy delicious food together. Many seniors are the gatekeepers of traditional family recipes that have been passed down for generations. With that said, ask your senior loved ones if they have any traditional family dishes they can make. Encourage the younger ones to get involved and help — cooking is a great way for your whole family to bond.

Organize an Easter basket exchange. Everyone loves receiving a beautifully decorated Easter basket filled with delicious chocolates and other goodies! Get together with a group of family members or friends and plan a basket exchange. It’s a great way to get in the Easter mood and spoil your loved ones with sweet treats.

Plant a container garden. Easter is the perfect time to create a container garden. They’re convenient, easy to manage, and you can grow them indoors or outdoors. Whether you want to grow herbs in the windowsill or bright, colorful spring flowers, a container garden is a wonderful activity to start on or before Easter.

Watch a classic Easter movie. Christmas isn’t the only time you can gather the whole family around for a classic movie. There are many classic Easter movies for everyone to enjoy, like Easter Parade starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, or It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown. An Easter movie night could be a new and fun family tradition. It’s also one that can happen over Zoom if the whole family isn’t able to get together!

Bake a batch of hot cross buns. We all know the famous nursery rhyme, and these delicious treats are often baked on Good Friday. Perhaps you have a family recipe handed down through the generations, or maybe you’d like to try a more modern version of this classic Easter treat. Either way, everyone in your family will enjoy them!

Create handmade Easter cards for family and friends. Everyone loves receiving a handmade card, it’s a very thoughtful gift and a wonderful way to let your loved ones know you’re thinking of them. For those in the family who are more artistically inclined, making Easter cards is a more creative way to celebrate the season.
