United Methodist Communities (UMC) President and CEO, Lawrence D. Carson, stood at the podium and quoted Arthur Dobrin, author and professor emeritus of management, “Whatever good there is in the world I inherit from the courage and work of those who went before me. I, in turn, have a responsibility to make things better for those who will inherit the earth from me.”

Last month at a gathering of the board of directors, Carlson stated, “We are here today to honor, recognize, and thank Sanford D. Brown, our general corporate counsel, for his longstanding association with United Methodist Communities, record of pro bono service as well as generous financial contributions.

Brown’s inheritance of courage and work came from many sources, particularly Sanford C. Flint his namesake and maternal grandfather, who served as president of the board of trustees of from 1930 until 1949. He witnessed his grandfather’s philanthropy and community outreach based on religious tenets.

Known as Sandy, he grew up in Interlaken, attended Asbury Park schools, graduated from Brown University, and then obtained a J.D. from Seton Hall University. Practicing at the Law Office of Sanford D. Brown, LLC, as the principal, he has 40 years’ experience representing institutional and private clients.

Numerous organizations have benefited from Brown’s goodwill and devotion: Boy Scouts of America, Asbury Park Rotary Club and Foundation, Monmouth County YMCAs, conservation foundations, municipalities of Interlaken and Ocean Township, New Jersey Association of School Attorneys, numerous churches and religious organizations, United Methodist Church Conference Chancellors Association, and the Kettering Foundation.

In closing, Carlson offered Brown a token of recognition and thanks and announced, “Sanford D. Brown has not only expanded upon the good there is in the world he inherited from the courage and work of those who went before him, but also followed through on making things better for those who will inherit the earth from him — extraordinary.”
