5 Brain Games that Help Keep Senior Minds Sharp

Grandfather and grandson are playing video games at home.

Both physical and mental exercises are essential for maintaining good cognitive health throughout our lifetime, but they are especially important for retirees and seniors. Here are five great brain games from our in-home senior care team in NJ that will provide seniors with mental stimulation as well as fun:

Bridge – Bridge is a card game drenched in history, and dates back to the 17th century. It involves four players in partnerships of two, and is a strategy-based game in which partners have to work together without tipping off the other team. The rules are a little complex, but it’s easy to grasp after a little practice. All you need is an ordinary pack of cards! There are plenty of local social groups you can join and play, which gives the game a lovely social aspect too.

Mahjong – This ancient game dates back to the Chinese Qing dynasty – a game of royalty and strategy based on a set of 144 tiles. It’s all about developing tactics and memory skills, and is incredibly popular especially among women. You can play online or in person in groups of up to four players.

Crossword Puzzles – Crossword puzzles come in varying difficulty, so there’s no need to start off with the daunting New York Times crossword. You can buy crossword books, and access free puzzles online and in local newspapers/magazines. There are even apps to do crosswords on a smartphone or tablet. They’re great word association games that exercise memory recall effectively.

Sudoku – If you or your loved one prefers numbers to letters, then sudoku may be more your style. These number-puzzles are great for improving focus and concentration, helping exercise logic and strategic skills.

Video Games – Video games aren’t just for young people! They’re a great form of entertainment that can be enjoyed alone as well as with others. So, they’re ideal for socializing as well as exercising reflexes, fine motor skills, strategic thinking, and memory skills. There is such a wide range of content out there, you’re sure to find something suitable – and learning new skills keeps minds sharp too.
