By Samantha Crawford, Corporate Director of Communications, UMC
At UMC, our mission has always been rooted in creating communities that feel like home. This month, that commitment comes to life as we begin an exciting refresh of our Bristol Glen community in Newton, NJ — made possible through the extraordinary legacy gift of Barbara L. Harris, a beloved former resident and longtime UMC board member.
Barbara’s dedication to UMC spanned decades, from her leadership within the NJ Methodist Conference to her 18 years of service on the UMC Board, where she helped establish and fundraise for Bristol Glen. When she later became a resident, she lived in the community she helped create. Upon her passing in June 2023, she left a significant gift to the UMC Foundation to support capital improvements across our communities.
This refresh honors her vision and ensures today’s and tomorrow’s residents enjoy safe, beautiful spaces that reflect the very best of home.
Reimagining Our Main Street Experience
Bristol Glen’s signature “Main Street” is getting a vibrant update inspired by downtown Newton. Improvements include:
A lighter walkway with new tile flooring and warm neutrals
Streetlamp‑style lighting
Comfortable seating for conversation and community
Refreshed storefront-style facades for Bristol Glen’s library, Town Hall event space, café, and more
Every detail reflects the natural beauty of Sussex County, with warm tans and earthy greens inspired by the surrounding wooded landscape.
A Library Designed for Gathering and Relaxation
The library — filled wall‑to‑wall with shelving — will now offer:
Comfortable lounge seating
A modernized computer station
Space for book clubs and small groups
A curated, revolving selection of books
A soothing smoky‑green color palette
This reimagined layout supports social connection and gives residents a welcoming space to read, gather, and relax.
A Completely Renewed Town Hall
As one of Bristol Glen’s most-used spaces, Town Hall will feature:
New large-scale carpet tiles with timeless patterns
Updated paint and brick façade details
Stylish, comfortable seating
Modern finishes throughout
Once complete, it will serve as an inviting venue for programs, events, and celebrations.
A Boutique Café Experience
Bristol Glen’s country kitchen will transform into a cohesive café setting. Across the hall, residents and guests will enjoy a new seating area and a nearby flex space will host fun pop‑ups like ice cream or coffee carts — creating more places for residents to gather and enjoy each other’s company.
A Rotunda That Feels Like a Peaceful Outdoor Oasis
The rotunda will become a serene, park‑like retreat with:
Organic, nature‑inspired carpeting
Indoor/outdoor‑style seating
Natural textures and greenery tones
Updated lighting and artwork
The beloved grand piano as a centerpiece
Perfect for music, visits with family, or quiet moments of reflection.
Continuing UMC’s Promise of Excellence
We are very excited to transform these spaces and more! The Bristol Glen Refresh is a continuation of UMC’s promise to provide exceptional comfort, community, and a vibrant lifestyle to all its residents today and for generations to come. Thanks to the generosity of Barbara L. Harris, her legacy of leadership, faith, and love will continue shaping Bristol Glen for generations to come.
